Gwyneth Paltow and Chris Martin Announce Separation
Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow announced that she was separating from her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, on Tuesday. The announcement came on Paltrow’s lifestyle brand website, Goop. The couple was together for over a decade and have two children, Apple, 9, and Moses, 7.
“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate,” Paltrow’s statement read. “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.”
“We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been,” said the Glee guest star. “We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time.”
Paltrow and the British singer met in 2002. They were married the next year in Southern California. The actress has talked openly in interviews about their marriage difficulties. She told Glamour U.K. last June, “It’s hard being married. You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We’re the same as any couple.”
This past September, Paltrow spoke with Good Morning America about how she and Martin “laugh it out” to to combat their “big ups and downs.”
The couple is determined to raise their children in a loving environment. The blog post continued, “We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.”
The statement was followed with a photo of the two in happier times and with the signature, “Love, Gwyneth & Chris.”
