Remy Ma: The Ruler is Back
When rapper Remy Ma released her debut solo album, “There’s Something About Remy: Based on a True Story,” many hip-hop fans were glad to see a female taking charge; the former Terror Squad affiliate quickly became well known for her lyrical ability and gritty New York City style. However, before Remy’s career could gain any substantial traction the then 27 year old Bronx native was arrested, charged, and convicted of assault, illegal weapon possession, and attempted coercion in connection with the July 2007 shooting of Makeda Barnes-Joseph in which Remy was identified as the shooter. The altercation took place outside of a Manhattan night club the “Pizza Bar” after a fight broke out between Remy and Barnes-Joseph, who had allegedly stolen three-thousand dollars from the rapper. In May 2008 Remy was sentenced to eight years in prison, and while the rest of the industry moved on, Remy’s career was frozen in time.
By the end of 2007 another female rapper was on the rise, Nicki Minaj’s debut mix tape, “Playtime Is Over” was about to send the Queens native’s career catapulting through hip-hop space. While many fans began to wonder where Nicki’s success would leave Remy, others simply forgot about her entirely-leaving Nicki Minaj to run the female rap game with little to no competition.
In July of this year, talks of Remy’s release began to surface. Remy’s husband, fellow rap artist Papoose, announced during one of his shows that his wife would be returning to the free world on July 30. Remy Ma fans everywhere took to social networks to express their excitement on the rapper’s return. On August 1, 2014 Remy Ma posted a memo on Instagram simply stating, “I’m back !!!” Remy’s welcome home note has received over 27,000 “likes” and more than 3,000 comments from fans who are anticipating her musical come back. In the days since her release Remy’s Instagram account has kept let the world know that not only is she back, but she means business; using hash tags such as “#TheRulersBack”. On her first day full day as a free woman Remy posted a picture of her and DJ Khalid sitting together in a recording studio with the caption, “I had a busy first day,” many fans citing this photo as proof of the rap “ruler’s” work ethic.
In the weeks and months to come Remy will have a lot to prove; the world she knew before her incarceration has changed, and now that fans have had a taste of the likes of Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea, will there still be room for the “Conceited” rapper? With only one studio album in her catalog Remy will have to put out a lot of material to catch up to the current female front runners; but with what appears to be an insatiable hunger it seems like Remy may be able to pull it off; however, only time will tell if there’s [still] something about Remy.
